Log files

Logs files contain information about important program events and provide an overview of detected threats. Logging acts as an essential tool in system analysis, problem/risk detection and evaluation, and troubleshooting. Logging is performed actively in the background without user interaction. Information is recorded based on the current log verbosity settings and can be viewed and archived.

Log files are accessible from the ESET Smart Security main window by clicking Tools > Log files. The drop-down menu at the top of the Log files window allows you to view your desired log type. The following logs are available:

  • Detected threats – Information about events related to the detection of infiltrations
  • Events – Actions performed by ESET Smart Security (this option is designed for system administrators and users to troubleshoot problems)
  • On-demand computer scan - All completed scans (double-click an entry to view details)

All logs can be copied to the clipboard by selecting the entry and clicking the Copy button. Press the CTRL key to select multiple entries.

Click the Filter… button to select certain types of records to be included in logs. Five log levels are available:

Critical warnings – The least detailed logging level containing critical system errors (such as Antivirus protection failed to start, Personal firewall is not working, etc.)
Errors – Errors such as “Error downloading file” and critical errors
Alerts – Warning messages and errors
Informative records – Informative messages including successful updates, alerts, and errors
Diagnostic records – The most detailed level including information needed for fine-tuning the program and all records described above
